Quarterly Profile of New York State Farms
Fourth Quarter 2017: The Apple Shed
For the fourth quarter of 2017 we tried out Maple Ridge Farms LLC in Newark, New York, doing business as the Apple Shed. Is there any variety of apples grown in New York State that you are looking for? If so, the Apple Shed is your source!
We ordered two bushels (approximately 42 lbs. each) of Cortland and Crispin apples. This amounted to about 150 apples. We used them primarily for canning into apple sauce.
At $49 per bushel the prices were great. However, since it is expensive to ship produce the delivery charge of $45.54 hurt. All in with tax we paid $155.92. This is a little higher than we would pay at the supermarket. On the other hand, we got what we want, in the quantity we wanted, while shopping locally. Once we had canned them we were way ahead when benchmarked against the cost of applesauce!
The quality and taste of the apples were superb. Although anytime apples are shipped, some minor bruising is the norm, they were packed with care and bruising was barely noticeable.
Next year, to avoid the shipping, we might try to swing buy Newark, New York in person. Regardless, the Apple Shed is a New York farm we will be happy to frequent again.
