Conserving Tradition Inc. Releases Summary of Suffolk County Municipal Poultry and Livestock Laws

HUNTINGTON, N.Y. – June 23, 2016 – Conserving Tradition today issued a web-friendly version of its survey of Suffolk County municipal poultry and livestock laws. For Suffolk County residents, this provides an easily accessible resource to their local laws with respect to ownership of poultry and livestock.

Although most of Suffolk County has a friendly policy toward the keeping of poultry and livestock, a few municipalities have severe restrictions or prohibitions. This runs contrary to a national trend of broad enactment of pro-poultry and pro-livestock policies by municipalities, including in the three largest cities in the United States, New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

The keeping of poultry and livestock has many positive benefits. With respect to poultry, Conserving Tradition has also published a resource highlighting many of these benefits, titled "Chickens and Other Poultry: A Public Good," to provide educational assistance to municipal officials engaged in poultry policymaking.

The survey of municipals laws is available at www.conservingtradition.org/suffolk-county and "Chickens and Other Poultry: A Public Good" is available at www.conservingtradition.org/poultry.

Its objective is to encourage and preserve know-how in traditional agricultural and homesteading activities, such as growing crops, raising poultry and livestock, butchering, cheesemaking, hunting, and beekeeping. The organization was formed in response to a concern that in many suburban and semi-rural areas, the continued practice of these activities is threatened.
